Before I explain about 916 KDM, you should know something about gold.

           Gold has a very low strength, it means a very less force can deform it. For example, if u make pure 100% gold in fine threads, after solidification you can simply break it like a thread i.e., it has a very low strength to resist force. I think, now u understood the property of pure 100% gold.

So we can't make jewelry with pure gold i.e., even though if u made it, it can't withstand as a chain or a necklace or bracelet. So, to make gold ornaments we should increase gold's strength. Alloying is the old, effective and only way to increase the strength of gold. Alloying is nothing but the addition of another metal to the parent metal in order to change its crystal structure. Change in crystal structure results in the change of properties of an alloyed metal. 

    So, we are adding a metal to gold in such a way that it should change the crystal lattice structure and increase its strength. So, to increase its strength, a metal called CADMIUM is alloyed with the gold. After alloying with Cadmium it results in the increase in strength. 

The minimum percentage of cadmium in gold to increase its strength is 8%.

That is  92% of gold + 8% of cadmium. 

This is the composition of gold ornaments which is alloyed with cadmium.

Actually, the pure gold will be 24-carat but to add cadmium to that,  2 karats will be reduced and cadmium will be added to that, i.e after cadmium alloying with gold we will get 22-carat gold only. 

now, what is 916 KDM ??

916: 

         916 is nothing but the percentage ratio of alloyed gold to its original pure gold. 

we will get 22 karat gold and pure gold is 24 karats.  

          

  now the ratio is  =  22/24 = 0.9166666666  (this is for a gram)

                  For a kg it is = 0.916666666 x 1000

                                      =916.666666

                Approximately = 916

Now if a merchant promises you 916 KDM gold, you should be in a position to understand that it is alloyed with cadmium and the gold percentage is 92% and the cadmium percentage is 8% and the purity of gold is 22-carat!
